Defining the West End
Within the West End Beirgarten social district, Viscous Fishes Brewing has been a staple of Downtown Cary’s craft beverage scene since its opening two years ago. More than just a taproom, this location serves as the central production facility, crafting the beer that supplies all four Viscous Fishes locations within central North Carolina. It’s a place where community, quality beer, and fun events converge, making it a standout destination for locals and visitors alike.

What Makes Viscous Fishes Unique: A Space for Everyone
Viscous Fishes prides itself on its incredible versatility. The team has created a model that successfully caters to a vast array of patrons and events without ever losing its core, laid-back identity with a vibrant nautical theme.

The key to this is a physical space designed for flexibility. The large patio with a fireplace and outdoor bar provides a perfect setting for public gatherings, while a dedicated private event space indoors allows for intimate celebrations without shutting down the entire operation. This means you can host a company gathering or a wedding rehearsal dinner while everyone else can still enjoy a casual happy hour just a few steps away.
As Taproom Manager Jeff Reilly highlights, this flexibility is a significant advantage:
“Most places you have to shut down for a private event. Here we have the flexibility where you can have your private event and it be private and offer the things you need while still serving the public.”

This “something for everyone” philosophy extends to their events, which range from weekly traditions like Open Mic Night and running clubs to unique happenings like vintage markets and listening parties. Marketing & Events Coordinator Jayme Byrd encapsulates this mission perfectly:
“We try to offer a little bit of everything to everybody… Our main goal while providing a fun atmosphere and great beer is that we really do offer something for everybody.”
What They Offer: Beyond the Beer
At its core, Viscous Fishes is about great beer, offering 18-22 taps that are 99% their own creation. Flagship beers, such as the hazy IPA Here Be Dragons and the light Octopils, are consistent crowd-pleasers. For those looking to explore, the brewers excel at seasonals and unique options like the Into the Abyss brown lager or the Frenzi line of gluten-free seltzers made with real fruit.

Jeff Reilly points out one such underrated gem, the West Coast IPA El Tiburón: “I think it’s great [and] well-made… but it probably is overlooked just ’cause anything in comparison to Here Be Dragons kind of falls by the wayside.”

But the experience goes beyond pints. A different food truck parks there daily, ensuring the culinary option is always fresh. They also operate a full liquor bar, can their own sparkling water, and offer crowlers (32-ounce cans) of fresh beer to go, perfect for tailgates or enjoying at home.
‘Tis the Season: Sharktoberfest Returns
This versatility shines brightest during their signature events, and the standout this season is the return of Sharktoberfest on Sunday, October 12th.
This authentic German-style festival features the NC Polka All-Stars providing the soundtrack, a dedicated German food truck, and, of course, Viscous Fishes’ own Sharktoberfest beer served in customized stein glasses. It’s an event designed to make the most of the ideal autumn weather and the brewery’s expansive outdoor amenities.

“People love it. It’s a great fun event day,” says Jayme Byrd. “October is a great month… Beautiful weather. Especially with our outdoor bar and our large patio area. We have a beautiful fireplace and people want to be outdoors.”
The Corner of Cary
Viscous Fishes Brewing has masterfully created an environment that is both a production powerhouse and a neighborhood living room.
It all comes back to their foundational goal, as stated by Jayme Byrd: to provide a “great atmosphere [and] great beer.” Whether you’re a dedicated craft beer enthusiast or just looking for a welcoming spot to spend an afternoon, Viscous Fishes has a place for you. Join them on October 12th to experience it at its most festive during Sharktoberfest.
