A Love Letter to Chatham Street

There is a stretch of Downtown Cary that does the work of a whole night out. On a good evening, the sidewalks fill, the patios light up, and Chatham Street starts to feel like the main room of town. You can eat outside, duck into a shop, catch a film, and grab dessert without getting back in the car.

Start with dinner. Crosstown Pub & Grill, across from The Cary Theater, is the classic neighborhood stop: burgers, a courtyard, and hours late enough for a pre-show drink. The Albatross mixes smashburgers and cocktails with indoor golf if the night calls for a little competition.

At Chatham and Academy, Lloyd’s Full Service has turned a former service station into a neighborhood restaurant, with a covered patio in the middle of the downtown hum. A short walk away, K38 Baja Grill brings a coastal, Baja-inspired menu and its own patio. And at Hank’s Downtown Dive, the patio wraps around a seasonal New American menu built for lingering.

Arrive a little early and the shops are worth the extra half hour. Gentlemen’s Corner is the men’s shop where classic meets current. Next door, Villa 19 feels like a small vacation. Resort-ready pieces and easy color. A few doors down, Hunky Dory is the vinyl stop, and the pleasant problem of leaving with one more record than you planned.

Then the sweet stretch. Geluna Gelato, beside Hank’s, makes small-batch Italian gelato. (The Local Palate recently called it the best gelato outside Italy.) FRESH. Local Ice Cream scoops street-side, where the evening crowd gathers with cups and spoons. The Milkshake Factory turns homemade ice cream into handspun shakes, with chocolates for anyone taking a little of the night home.

Save the last seat for The Cary Theater. Films, live shows, and the pleasure of walking out onto a street that is still awake. Pair a screening with dinner across the street, a cocktail down the block, or a cone on the way back to the car.

Chatham Street works because the businesses do. Come hungry. Stay a while. Chatham is ready for you!
