It might not be the world record numbers of year’s past, but that did not impact the spirits at the 7th Annual World’s Largest Flip Flop 1K in downtown Cary this weekend. The race was back at Bond Brothers Beer Company on Saturday, July 17th, after a hiatus in 2020 due to the pandemic.
“In previous years we were always trying to break the world record,” said Rick Flores of Nog Run Club. Nog is a non-profit that organizes runs and races all in the name of charity. They are the race sponsor for the Flip Flop 1K.
“Two years ago we broke the record with just over 1,650 in flip flops here in Cary. This year, because of protocols and the pandemic we’re expecting between 300-400 people.”
Flores said that they wanted to create an event that was for everyone while at the same time raising money to donate back to local charities in the area.
“We’re giving back to local charities through these efforts; next month we’re donating backpacks to the Wake Guardian Ad Litem,” added Flores, who was first across the finish-line securing a match donation for the fundraiser — a win-win for the event.
The start-finish-line was tucked in on Cedar Street right behind Bond Brothers, who has played host for the race since it began.
“We look forward to this event every year,” said Jeremy Bond.
“It’s exciting to be back, and we’re coming back again next year in 2022 to break the world record,” added Bond.
Flores said the team at Nog loves being at Bond Brothers and in downtown Cary, “obviously it’s growing a lot and we love being a part of it.”
“It’s hard to imagine what’s happening downtown right now. We were here six years ago and there was nothing, and now these buildings are popping up and people are everywhere, it’s wonderful to see and to be part of it. We couldn’t ask for anything more,” added Bond.
In total the event raised just over $5,000. For more information about the Nog run club visit their website here, and stay tuned for another attempt at the world record in 2022.
