The Cary Theater: Where History, Film, and Community Collide

Front and center on Chatham Street, The Cary Theater is a beloved cultural landmark of Downtown Cary. With a rich history dating back to the 1940s and a modern-day role as a hub for independent film, live performances, comedy, improv, and community events, this iconic venue is a must-visit for locals and visitors alike.

A Storied Past: From Movie House to Cultural Hub

The Cary Theater’s story began in 1946, when it first opened as the town’s first indoor movie theater, founded by Paul Thomas Chandler. Beyond screening films, it also hosted live performances, making it a cornerstone of entertainment in Cary.

Over the decades, the building took on new roles—serving as Cary Clothiers (a clothing store), an auto parts store, and even a recording studio. But in 2011, the Town of Cary purchased the property, breathing new life into the historic space.

After a 13-month renovation and expansion, the theater reopened in 2014 as a multi-use cultural facility, ensuring The Cary Theater would remain a dynamic part of downtown Cary’s revitalization.

The Cary Theater Today: A Vibrant Arts Destination

Today, The Cary Theater is more than just a cinema—it’s a thriving center for the arts. Film lovers can enjoy independent, classic, and cult films, while live performance enthusiasts can experience comedy shows, improv nights, and other special events. The theater also plays a key role in Cary’s cultural scene by curating the Movie Night series at Downtown Cary Park, where families and friends gather on the Great Lawn for unforgettable outdoor screenings under the stars.

BEYOND: The Cary Film Festival

Each fall, The Cary Theater transforms into the centerpiece of BEYOND, an acclaimed short film and screenplay festival. Taking place September 11-14, 2025, this event brings together filmmakers and audiences for a celebration of storytelling. Attendees can expect quality short films, panel discussions, workshops, and networking opportunities, all within walking distance of downtown Cary’s charming shops and restaurants.

Zombiepalooza: A Spooky, Family-Friendly Film Fest

For something uniquely fun, don’t miss Zombiepalooza—an annual zombie short film competition held every October. This year’s event takes place October 24, 2025, on the Great Lawn at Downtown Cary Park (or indoors at The Cary Theater if weather doesn’t cooperate). North Carolina filmmakers of all ages and skill levels are invited to submit their family-friendly, zombie-themed short films (under 5 minutes)—with a creative twist: each film must include a Rubik’s Cube! Submissions open August 1, 2025, and close September 26, 2025, via FilmFreeway.
