For music and beer lovers alike, Hunky Dory is the place to be. The store has a cozy and nostalgic feel that makes you want to spend hours browsing through crates of vintage records while sipping a local brew.
We got to experience the place for ourselves and while there chatted with Nandi Alston, who’s a big fan of 70s rock and 90s R&B and has been working for Hunky Dory for the last two years. She started at their Durham location and then moved over to Raleigh before eventually arriving in Cary.
Don’t tell anyone, but the Cary location is her favorite, “It is a hidden gem, and we are the only record store in Cary right now, so I feel like that brings the charm to Cary too in its own way. There’s a lot of beauty to Downtown Cary, because there is so much history here, and I feel like if we’re going to be one of those places that embraces the history of music, why not be in the heart of Cary?”
According to Nandi, when people come to Hunky Dory they can expect great music, great people and great beer, “We have a multitude of genres. We have a great selection of people who help choose what genres we post and put out. You will definitely find really good beer. We always have good beer on tap, but it’s probably most surprising to people that we have so much variety in our music taste, so there’s always something for everybody here.”
Finally, Nandi explained that Hunky Dory’s Downtown Cary location is only just getting started, “We are still in our soft opening, but currently for Cary we are working on very big things for our grand opening.”
