Grab your wheels and hit the track

In the ongoing “check out that new thing in Downtown Cary” series, a pop-up skate park is setting up shop on the grounds of the old library site. It’s called a PASS (pop-up action sports station) and the pump-track style course is open for riders on all wheels.

Billy Dexter is the Operations and Programs Supervisor for Action Sports for the Town of Cary and he says the track will be a great addition to the park.

“We selected this site to help draw families to this area. These pump-tracks are extremely popular because all wheels can use it; skateboards, bikes, skates and scooters. We’ve even seen kids enjoy running on it,” said Dexter, who himself had a skateboard helmet strapped to his backpack during our interview.

“I love all wheeled sports, and I enjoy doing all of them. I can’t wait to get my wheels out here. I had a little preview and I can tell you it’s pretty quick and fun,” added Dexter.

The pump track intends to call the park home through the end of the November before moving on to another location.

“We debuted the track during the Cary 150th birthday party and people loved it, the community was already using it and making it their own,” said Dexter.

The pump track team says to always bring a helmet, but reiterates that all wheels are welcome. The track was designed and built by John Saxton, Joel Barnett and the team at Skidmark Parks, as they masterfully weaved straight material into the curves and turns on the course.

“Don’t push yourself because even though it’s small, it’s quick, so maybe just take it slow and have fun,” added Dexter with some friendly advice.

The pump track is located in the back right corner of the old library site and open daily.
