Local Veteran One of First to Finish Tree This Season
Academy Street is transformed into a beautiful display of Christmas tree after Christmas tree, between now and January 2nd. The annual Gifting Tree Project, sponsored by The Mayton, is a chance for local companies, shops, families, schools and organizations to decorate a Christmas tree in their style. The Mayton provides the group with the winning tree a donation to the nonprofit of their choice, and this being the 10th anniversary of the Gifting Tree Project, three trees will win prizes.
We were strolling down Academy Street on night one and ran into Jo and Richard Spyrison from American Legion Post 67 (the Post is located right over on Chapel Hill Road).
“We had everything ready, with a busy schedule, so this was the right day for us to get it done,” said Richard, an Army Veteran who served for 20 years before retiring from the Military in 1984 here in Cary. Richard now serves as the Commander for Post 67.
You can see the American Legion’s tree right in front of the Post Office, and the dozens more that now line Academy Street until the New Year. Voting does not open until December 4th during the big downtown Cary Heart of the Holidays Celebration.
“This tree represents joy! We added gnomes this year with all of the military men as well and ornaments with all of the branches of service. One new feature this year is our angel; our son 3-D printed it,” said Jo (she seemed to be beaming with pride about that).
Take a stroll up-and-down Academy Street over the next few days (it’s hard to beat at night), see the trees and take in the Holiday spirit.
Then go vote for your favorite starting December 4th (there are QR codes on every tree’s sign with voting instructions).
