We’ve introduced you to a series of visual displays calling downtown home, and his month (March 2022) the featured artist is Matt McConnell and a piece he calls Evolution Field.
We caught up with some of Matt’s crew on a nice March afternoon to learn more about the new piece that is located at the Old Library site.
Brenna McQuay was part of a 4-person team when we stopped by, and they were working on some updated touches to the light display.
“As you drive past or walk past on the sidewalk you’ll see that is looks like it’s sort of in motion because it’s inspired by the galaxy,” said Brenna.
She also told us that the piece on display right now in Cary is fashioned after a larger piece that will be showcased at Burning Man in Nevada this year. That one (at Burning Man) will be about 3-times larger than the version here in Cary.
Evolution Field is a triple layer moiré wall that blends color and light in visual waves reminiscent of galaxy forms. The slightest change in perspective creates an evolution in form, which will be seen from great distances, especially at night. The three layers create valleys that participants can walk through, shifting focus from layers to an internal landscape. Motion sensors set at the ends, and in other locations, will act as gateways, activating waves of complimentary colors through the more stable slow evolution of color in fiber optic systems lining every vertical element. The work is meant to reflect on the complexity of layering energy and relationships, which shifts with only the slightest change.
The Evolution Field is illuminated now, so be sure to head over after the sun has gone down to see it on full display.
“It’s multi-color LED lights and aluminum, and this is one of many pieces that Matt has created that are showcased around Raleigh and around the world,” added Brenna.
