Cary is excited to get started with pre-construction of the Downtown Park in the next few weeks of February! This community-led project is a well-conceived enhancement to Cary and the greater Triangle community that will be an iconic public space for all Cary citizens, a catalyst for future development of downtown, and a regional destination for central North Carolina.
Along with robust programming, the space will feature active performance places, farmers market spaces, public art installations, botanical gardens showcasing native plants, food and beverage facilities, a children’s nature play area, a dog park, and an elevated skywalk.
As you have probably noticed, site preparation is already underway. Over the coming months, more of the area will be restricted as we address maintenance needs of the existing park and fountain area and continue to prepare for construction to begin this spring. As construction progresses, the pond will begin to take a shape as a functional amenity, and other green storm water landscaping will emerge to enhance environmental preservation.
You may also notice the changing canopy in the coming months. It is incredibly important that we preserve as many trees as possible, so we facilitated a comprehensive survey to assess their health and viability and used an arborist’s recommendations to guide our tree removals. In place of the removed trees, we’ll be introducing over 400 shade, evergreen and ornamental trees spanning over 30 different native species to be enjoyed by our community for years to come.
