Performances at the Page’s Outdoor Season is here! Take a look at what the first performance of the season looked like, and what is yet to come this summer.
The 2024 outdoor season for Performances at the Page began on Friday, June 7th with the Roadhouse Storytellers, who brought local and regional tellers together for an evening of stories in the garden of the Page-Walker. Take a look at the featured storytellers:
Cynthia Brown lives in Summerville, NC. She has been an acclaimed performer and educator for over thee decades in NC, the South, and Europe. Cynthia uses her many talents to bring texture to her down-home Southern style. Her costumes and props add rich dimensions to each special tale.
Chris Wise considers himself a ‘story-finder’ as much as a storyteller. He finds stories–and songs–hidden within his own and others’ lives. And, from time to time, he just makes stuff up. He settled in Raleigh 30 years ago after a career as a soldier.
Kathy Gordon was born in the mountains of Western North Carolina and grew up on stories of her parents’ childhoods. Her father was a great storyteller. As an adult, Kathy taught in Asheville City Schools where she taught through stories. After retirement in 2006, she continued crafting and telling stories about life in the mountains of Western NC.
Sam Pearsall is the organizer of Roadhouse Storytellers. Sam believes we are all made of stories! Stories are what we remember and dream and how we think of each other. Every story is a whole world, and Sam believes that with any good story, the further in you go, the bigger it gets.
If you missed this event, no worries! The North Carolina Storytelling Guild will be telling more stories live at The Cary Theater on November 1st and 2nd for the 6th Annual Old North State Storytelling Festival! The festival will feature Bil Lepp, Megan Wells, Lipbone Redding, Linda Gorham and Sam Pearsall. Visit https://www.oldnorthstatestorytellingfestival.com/ for more info.
There are still plenty of upcoming events in the outdoor season of Performances at the Page. The next event will be Jamrock, on Friday, July 12th from 7-9 pm. A Page-Walker favorite, Jamrock returns to fill the air with authentic reggae rhythms. Rock out with “yard style” reggae, including lovers of rock, oldies, dancehall, and roots music. Celebrate the bands’ Jamaican influence and origins. Enjoy food from Jerk Man Island Cuisine and Dessert from Kona Ice.
And, on Friday, August 2nd from 6:30 – 8:30 pm you can attend Celebration of Bluegrass. In partnership with Pinecone, enjoy an up-and-coming young bluegrass band. Special opening performance by the student fiddle, banjo, guitar, mandolin and bass musicians of Bluegrass Jam Camp. Grab some food from Big Mike’s BBQ or some dessert from Mama Bird’s Ice Cream.
If you’d like to attend one of these events, here’s what you need to know! Blankets and lawn chairs are permitted for free outdoor concerts, but please do not use umbrellas. A food truck will be on-site, but picnics are also welcome. Please be considerate of the venue and other concert-goers and leave pets at home.
