8th Annual Zombiepalooza Fright Night in Downtown Cary

It’s back again, a fright night in Downtown Cary to get everyone in the Halloween spirit. The 8th annual Zombiepalooza returns on Friday night, October 20th, hosted by the historic Cary Theater.

The event includes a costume contest and a short film competition. Attendees are encouraged to dress in their favorite costumes for Cary’s favorite night of cosplay. Prizes will be awarded for best costumes after the film screenings.

Zombiepalooza is free to attend.

We caught up with Lani Simeona, the Operations and Program Supervisor for The Cary Theater.

DTC: What makes this such a fun and spooky event?

LS: Our audiences love the “homemade” zombie films and all-ages costume contest. I am always impressed with how filmmakers creatively incorporate the required prop (this year, it’s a birthday hat). People also love a chance to get into costume, and each year, we see some pretty amazing characters walk through the doors of The Cary for Zombiepalooza.

DTC: What kind of films will we be seeing this year?

LS: Each year, we get a new batch of films submitted for Zombiepalooza. Films must be 5 minutes or less, have a zombie theme, include the required prop, and be “family friendly.” Filmmakers of all skill levels are welcome to submit their zombie short film.

DTC: What does it take to put together a great zombie film?

LS: In my opinion, a great zombie film has to include humor and suspense…and of course zombies. You want to keep the audience on the edge of their seat but also add in some comic relief to break up the tension.

DTC: What does it take to put together a great zombie costume?

LS: For our costume contest, you don’t have to be a zombie. You can create your own costume or be a famous character. It’s really up to the individual. This is an event for families and zombie fans, so we see a variety of costumes each year.
